Why It Can Be Worth Waiting for the Right Tattoo Artist

Sometimes the hardest part of getting the tattoo you want isn't deciding what to get. It's waiting for the artist you actually want to tattoo it.

At Black Swan Tattoo Company in Austin, Jason Metka works as a single-artist private studio. With one artist and a limited number of appointments available each week, the schedule can fill several months in advance due to larger projects that require multiple sessions. For some clients, the wait is unexpected. For others, it's simply part of choosing an artist whose work they specifically want.

Start With a Conversation

The first step is a complimentary consultation at the studio. This is where you and Jason can sit down together and talk through your ideas in detail. Depending on the project, consultations can take close to an hour and may cover everything from subject matter and placement to scale, reference images, existing tattoos, and the overall direction you're hoping to take. It's also a chance to make sure the fit is right on both sides. You should leave the consultation feeling comfortable with the project, the process, and the person you're trusting to tattoo it. If you're ready to move forward, you'll leave a deposit and choose your tattoo dates.

From the Calendar to the Tattoo

For larger projects, your tattoo will be completed over multiple appointments. Once your dates are secured, the next step is simply looking forward to getting started. When you arrive for your first session, Jason will revisit the goals you've discussed and begin the freehand drawing process directly on the body. From there, the tattoo takes shape through sizing, placement, and refinement as the design works with your individual anatomy. The goal is to create a custom tattoo that fits you rather than simply reproducing an image.

Why the Wait?

Black Swan Tattoo Company is one artist; Jason's calendar includes both new clients and ongoing projects, and larger tattoos require multiple sessions over time meaning availability is limited.

If your priority is getting tattooed as soon as possible, a shorter wait may be important to you. But if you've found an artist whose work you genuinely want, waiting for the right appointment can be a worthwhile tradeoff. The goal isn't to rush you into the first available chair. It's to make sure that when your tattoo begins, you're working with the artist you chose in the first place.

Ready to Start?

If you've been thinking about a large-scale or Japanese-inspired tattoo, you don't have to wait until you're ready to be tattooed immediately to reach out. Start with your idea. We'll schedule a complimentary consultation, give you time to talk through the project with Jason, and go from there.

If Jason's work is what you've been looking for, we'd be happy to hear what you're thinking about.
