What to Expect During a Large-Scale Freehand Tattoo Session
What to expect during your large scale tattoo session
At Black Swan Tattoo Company, most Japanese tattoos are created over multiple sessions. Large designs like sleeves, back pieces, and torso work require planning, patience, and precision. Whether you’re starting your first major tattoo or continuing your collection, understanding what happens during longer sessions helps make the experience as smooth and comfortable as possible.
The Freehand Difference
Unlike stencil-based tattooing, freehand tattoos are drawn directly onto the skin before tattooing begins. This allows the design to move naturally with your body, following muscle structure and anatomy for a cohesive, balanced look.
Our owner, artist Jason Metka uses this approach to ensure every piece fits the body and fills the space appropriately based on the desired result—nothing is traced or pre-made. Each session includes drawing time, so the artwork evolves uniquely for you.

How Long a Session Typically Lasts
Large-scale Japanese tattoos are completed in multiple sessions, spaced apart a minimum of 3 - 4 weeks between; or longer depending on the client’s preference and budget. Each session can last several hours, depending on the area, design complexity, and your comfort. The first couple of hours of a project start session are dedicated to getting the design laid out and drawn on without rushing, and then roughly 4 hours of tattooing for the day.

Preparing for Your Session
Simple preparation goes a long way in making your tattoo session smoother:
Rest well the night before your appointment.
Eat a solid meal before arriving; it helps maintain energy and focus.
Hydrate the day before and during your session for better skin response.
Dress comfortably and choose clothing that allows easy access to the area being tattooed. We also recommend choosing dark or black clothing that you don’t mind staining due to potential marker and pigment transfer during process.
Avoid alcohol or blood thinners 24 hours before your appointment.
Jason will discuss any additional recommendations based on your tattoo placement and skin type during your consultation.
Comfort During Long Tattoo Sessions
Every client’s comfort level varies, and Jason adjusts the pace accordingly. Communication is key—if you need to pause or stretch, just ask. The private studio setting at Black Swan provides a calm, focused environment with no distractions or crowds.
You’re welcome to bring water, snacks, or headphones to help stay relaxed. Sessions are structured to keep your energy steady and your skin in good condition for clean, consistent work.

Aftercare Between Sessions
After each session, Jason will clean and use a medical spray bandage for your tattoo to ensure your skin is thoroughly protected to head home, then go over aftercare steps in detail. Following these directions carefully ensures smooth healing and long-term results—especially for large Japanese pieces that may cover multiple body areas.
Each stage of healing prepares your skin for the next appointment. Jason will advise on how long to wait before continuing to the next session, depending on placement and your healing progress. We generally suggest scheduling a series of appointments in advance to ensure you get your preferred day of the week and interval between sessions at your own pace locked in based on your schedule and budget.
Building Your Japanese Tattoo Step by Step
One of the key advantages of freehand work is flexibility. As each session progresses, Jason adjusts shading, background flow, and transitions to maintain balance and movement throughout the sleeve or backpiece.
This ensures your final tattoo looks unified and intentional, no matter how many sessions it takes to complete.

Japanese Color Koi Tattoo Sleeve : finished in 3 full day sessions.
A common question we get from new clients is how long does it take to finish a tattoo sleeve? There are many variables involved such as subject matter, the size of the person’s arm and the amount of detail the client has in mind for their overall style direction. But for something like this example of a Japanese inspired double koi sleeve (from wrist to the top of the shoulder) three full day tattoo sessions is an accurate estimate. The first session involves drawing the design on to fit the client’s body/musculature and tattooing the outline with some initial shading. The second session is dedicated to background and ongoing shading work. And in this case, the third and final session was adding color to the koi and cherry blossom elements. For the initial sleeve start session a full day booking is required to allow proper time to get the entire sleeve design laid out. But for clients who are newer to getting tattooed and a bit apprehensive to sit for additional full day sessions; it is easy to switch to half day visits for the ongoing work after the first full day to chip away until the sleeve is complete. Of course we always suggest a consultation to confirm the details for each client’s specific plans; so get in touch to get more information for planning your next tattoo!
Japanese Blackwork Cover-Up Tattoo
A cover up tattoo is a second chance for a tattoo project that didn’t turn out as the client expected. Despite there being some limitations to what should/could be done with a cover up tattoo project, if you are open minded to suggestions your finished result can be stellar. In this recent blackwork tattoo cover up half sleeve, our client wanted to cover up the majority of the original piece while keeping a floral element to be re-worked. Using inspiration from Japanese traditional blackwork designs, a swirl and cloud blast over for the half sleeve makes a bold statement. The design was drawn on directly to custom fit the needed cover up areas and musculature, finished in one day session. If you have been on the fence about covering up an old tattoo, consider options that are darker, bold and saturated. We offer complimentary consultations to discuss your options and make sure you have all the information needed to feel confident that your second round will end in a fantastic result.
Second sleeve finish!
We have been so grateful for the warm welcome Austin clients have given us! ATX is filled with lovely people and one of them is our amazing client Jordan. Jason just wrapped up the second full tattoo sleeve he created for him; which was made to honor his family focusing on a Koi for each member. Which involved working around an existing meaningful tattoo, showing the importance of custom tattoo design work made for the individual. The freehand drawing process allows the tattoo design to be custom fit for the client’s frame; and choosing full coverage Japanese inspired tattoo sleeves for a solid look. It has been an absolute joy to work towards his tattoo goals together and making plans for his back and front! If you have been on the fence about a large scale project, we always suggest coming in for a free consultation to get some information and start planning ahead.
